FEATURED E-AUTHOR:
Free E-Serials - The Perfect Place to Showcase your Talent
By Jim Farris
As an e-author, one is always looking for a way to bring attention
to oneself, and showcase one's own works. With a free, web-
published e-serial, the e-author has the perfect opportunity to
showcase all of their creative talents.
Can you draw? Well, with a small investment, you can get a
scanner to scan in images for your stories that you have created
yourself. Can you compose music? Well, with a midi editor and a
midi keyboard, you can place MIDI files of your own musical
creations as background music for your own web-creations.
Of course, in all of this, the first thing is to have a novel that you
can e-serialize - so finish the book, first! Once you have it, look it
over. Is it short (60 to 80 thousand words)? If so, you should
probably consider posting chapters about once a week. If it's
longer, you can post a little more frequently. The idea is to have a
work that will be posted over the course of two months or more, to
give your subscribers time to talk to their friends, attract more
subscribers to your serial, and thus attract more attention to your
works.
For example, the current work I am e-serializing, "The Last
God", is approximately 120,000 words long. I post three to four
chapters a week, the speed being based on how quickly I am
completing chapters in the second novel. Thus, my subscribers
know that each time they see another chapter being posted, I have
completed another chapter in the second book. If you choose to do
it this way, however, you should also probably give yourself some
lee-way in case you become ill, get involved in another project, or
whatever. In my case, I have a 20-chapter lead between the first
book and the second, because I didn't post the first chapter of the
first book until I had completed the 20th chapter in the second
book. This way, no matter what happens, I have plenty of lead time
to continue work on the second novel. My subscribers also know
that once the first book has finally all been posted, the second book
will be ready for them to read. If, of course, you don't intend to
have a second novel follow the first in your e-serial, you don't need
to worry about this.
Having completed and proofed your first e-serialized novel, we
now look into "How do I web-publish it?" Well, the easiest way is
to use a WYSIWYG editor. FrontPageExpress is my HTML editor
of choice, however Netscape Composer is also quite good. Both
are free. To use them, simply copy and paste the chapter you are
wanting to post from your work into the editor, then save the work.
If your word processor inserts strange formatting commands into
the text that the editor doesn't understand, you can simply paste
into Notepad (or similar text-editing program), then copy and paste
from Notepad to eliminate the formatting symbols. Be advised that
if your story relies on formatting or special fonts to tell the tale,
then most likely it isn't suitable for e-publishing anyway. Not
everyone who loads the pages for your e-serial into their browser
will have your special fonts, formats, and other tricks - thus, if you
don't like the way it looks after having been processed through
Notepad (or similar text editor), then it's highly likely your readers
won't like the way it looks, either, and you should consider
revising the work, or writing a new one.
Once each page is saved, then consider the presentation of the
page. The page should be easily readable, and yet look nice.
Consider your background image, the color of your text, and the
size of your text. For fonts, you should probably use Times New
Roman. It's a font everyone is guaranteed to have when their
browser reaches the page, it looks professional, and it is easily
legible. Consider your font size, also - make sure it's large enough
to be read, but not so large it's annoying. 10 or 12 point font is
usually appropriate, and the equivalent in HTML is "Font Size=3"
Don't worry how to do this via HTML coding, however, as the
editor can do it with the click of a button. Just highlight all the text,
and click the "font larger" or "font smaller" buttons in your editor
until the size is one you feel comfortable with.
Now, the frills - if you can draw (and draw well), consider
illustrating your own story. Even simple pen-and-ink drawings can
add a lot of class to a story, if done *well.* However, try to limit
yourself to one per chapter, with as high a quality as you can
manage for your art. Remember, this is a novel, not a comic book.
There are hundreds of different scanners on the market - choose
the one that fits within your price range and is compatible with
your machine. Once you have your art scanned, you can edit it
further with any number of fine programs such as Paint Shop Pro
or Adobe Photoshop. Remember to make sure that the file you
finish with is saved in either .gif or .jpg format - some browsers
will not be able to read other formats. If you are unable to create
your own art, you might consider working with an artist who is
willing to be a part of your project, offering them a link to their
website and full credit as the "official" artist for your series.
Check around on the web - there are several "artist websites"
available where you can get in contact with graphic and computer
artists who might be interested in participating in a project with
you, as it would benefit them, as well. One you may try is
If you can compose MIDI's, consider creating your own
background music for for your pages, music to match the theme of
the story, or what is happening in each particular chapter you post.
I use Midisoft's "MidiStudio 4.0" - it's an older program, but works
fine for me. I compose a midi for each basic section of the story, so
that in the end, each midi forms a single movement in a larger
symphony that is the background music for the entire novel. You,
however, may wish to only compose a handful, and use them for
particularly dramatic or poignant points in your story. If you
cannot compose midis, you may consider getting in touch with
MIDI composers on the net who may be interested in a similar
"banner exchange" with you, exchanging links and publicity for
participation in the project.
Another possible "frill" you may consider adding is various "java"
applets. Be careful with this - not all browsers support Java, and
some Java applets which work fine on your machine may cause
other machines to crash. Test each applet thoroughly, both on your
machine and on others, before you add it to one of your pages.
Also, consider whether or not the applet really improves the
appearance of the page, or is simply "flash". Don't bother sticking
on a "lake" applet unless the part of your story it will appear in has
something to do with a lake or water. In the end, nearly everyone
has seen everything that's out there, and no Java applet will really
help improve a story that's poorly written in the first place.
For myself, one of the things I have done is add sound-files (.wav)
of the characters of my e-serial speaking. For the most part, I have
created them all using Sound Forge 4.0. This is a particularly
expensive program, however, and you may wish to forgo this.
Once you have everything working and you have tested the page
on your own computer to make sure it works, you then upload it to
your website. If you don't have a website to upload it to, check out
Tripod.com, Xoom.com, or Geocities.com to get free webspace.
Then, log onto your own site, and load up the page that's there in
your browser. Also, have a freind take a look at the page in their
own browser on their machine, and tell you if there are any
problems.
If this is your first time doing this, it's likely that your first attempt
won't work. The most common mistake is to make the links to
pictures, sounds or other files incorrectly, linking them to files on
your hard-drive rather than to files on your site. Check the URL's
for all links inside your page, making sure that they say something
like http://webprovider.com/yourname/ instead of "file:\\\c:\my
documents\myfiles\" Check also for the speed at which each page
loads - a page that takes over a minute to load needs to be re-
worked so it loads faster. Try removing some of the graphics or
other linked files, or otherwise re-working them to make the file
smaller so the page loads faster.
Of course, you'll still need readers! To get readers requires that you
get the word out about your serial. Try submitting your page to
will place your page in many if not most of the most popular
search engines. You can also try using http://linkexchange.com to
spread the word about your work. Tell your friends, neighbors,
family, aquaintances, co-workers, and so on about the page.
Encourage everyone who visits your site to spread the word.
Eventually, you'll have a moderate readership.
In conclusion, free web-based e-serials offer you the chance to
drum up publicity both for yourself and your works by showcasing
your talents. There is an enormous amount of work involved, but if
you have any skill at web-page design to combine with your skills
at writing, it may be the perfect opportunity for you.

SPECIAL: FEATURED E-AUTHOR
The Price of Freedom
By: Kim Gaona
As we come to a time of celebration, I believe it only fair to
remember the people who gave not only their fortunes and honor
for our freedom but also their lives. Few people survived after
signing the Declaration of Independence, most captured and
tortured or ripped from their homes of prosperity all for the sake of
"Freedom."
Today, we have the opportunity to speak or write without
censorship. I'm sure John Hancock and Benjamin Franklin would
be astounded at the growth of our nation not realizing when they
pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor that the United
States of America would reach a level of extreme significance in
correspondence.
E-Publishing today is another example of the way our freedom of
expression as well as technology has advanced within our country.
We're not held back by restrictions however we must remember we
are responsible for our creativity and expressions. As Mrs. Mead
in 1819 presented an oration at the 4th of July Celebrations in
Kentucky, we too need to realize we're in the beginnings of a new
revolution.
Opportunities are boundless in the realm of the World Wide Web.
Publishers such as DiskUs and Wordbeams are able to provide
people throughout the world publications on many subjects and
solicitations within seconds. There's no waiting a month for the
next stage coach or driving across town to the nearest book store,
just a click of the mouse and you have the newest release at your
fingertips.
Authors or aspiring writers, have more of an opportunity to place
their works in the hands of editors with technology today. We're
not pinned beneath limitations of arbitrary publishing houses that
dictate what they feel the public want or don't want. We're able to
leave those choices to the populace.
You can search and find a multitude of Online Publishers then
decide what you're interested in or wanting to read. We're not held
prisoner by the few topics that certain traditional publishers feel
are only worthy of stocking at bookstores. You decide and make
your own choice.
We're no longer forced to read of an impeccable world or a
flawless character that only has to fight off one villain and then
live happily ever after. Instead we can find a book that we relate
to, use as an example of character building qualities or one that
will take us to worlds unknown.
Freedom is what compelled me to publish in the E-Publishing
Industry. I wanted to exercise my rights as an author and write the
best book I could with characters that face day by day trials and
errors. Characters that grow each step of the way, the same as we
Americans have over the generations.
The fifty-six men who signed our Declaration of Independence that
4th of July risked everything for us with years of hardships and a
struggling nation. I plan to employ those rights and show the
generations of the future that the United States of America will
ever reign as a Nation of Honor and Freedom for all.

FEATURED E-PUBLISHER:
The future of multimedia eBooks may change the way we read
by Bob Gunner
A future where books are not just read, but become a full
multimedia experience controlled by the desire of the reader,
is just around the corner. We are just becoming aware of
eBooks, and exactly what an eBook actually is, as well as what
it can do, and these definitions are changing daily as quickly
as the new technology changes.
When I started out in the field of eBook publishing in 1986
(our company was called Mind-Eye electronic Publications back
then, but was changed to Cyber-Pulp later because another eBook
publishing company was using a similar name) we published in
ASCII text files only. Then around 1987, shell compiler
presentation programs were made available to create a better
presentation for the eBook reader. The eBook audience of today
is expecting a lot more in the area of presentation from
electronic versions of the books they read.
The new generation of eBook reader wants the bells and whistles
expected from the new technology available. They would like
the eBook to emulate the traditional book in both design and
reading properties.
They want fully detailed color covers, pages with type that
resemble the layout of a traditional hard copy book, and are
thrilled when new technology features such as hyper links, web-
enabling hyper links, graphics, audio, and video is available
to add to the reading experience.
When you write your novel (or any book for that matter) you
should always take this fact into consideration. Think of how
you can make the eBook reading experience more pleasant to the
reader. Consider how it might be really exciting to have the
capability to get more information concerning the work or
related subject matter.
You should expand on the concept of the traditional book, by
making the product interactive and an educational experience.
We are coming to the time in eBook history when the reading
experience should also be an interactive multimedia
experience. We have been promised this by the eBook industry
during its early years, now it is time to make good on the
promise.
Already, Microsoft and eBook reader manufacturers (such as
RocketBook /SoftBook) are adding such multimedia functionality
to their products.
My own company has developed a product called "Digital
Paperbacks" which makes an HTML eBook presentation web-
enabled, allowing the feed of hyperlinks from sites on the Internet.
You can visit an author's homepage to actually interact with
him/her, you can listen to a sample of music and buy the album
if you like. These and other eBook interaction enhancements
will be the new fruit that will take the eBook into the future.
There will come the time in the near future when all eBook
readers and mobile computing devices will be wireless and
Internet connections will be completely mobile, so start now
and research and design your eBooks with these considerations
in mind! If you have any questions, email me at
cyberplp@hia.net, and I'll be glad to answer them!

EVA'S COOKING WITH PASSION:
By: Eva Kende
Now that we have created a whole menu, what's next? The whole
exercise of going through a menu was to show you how you can
make it effortless. The most important ingredient to a romantic
evening is to relax, enjoy and have fun. The ambience you
create is more important than the food served.
You have to keep in mind your partner deserves your full attention.
He is the focus of the evening. That's what makes it romantic for
both of you. He can go anywhere and get a gourmet meal served to
perfection, but he has chosen to spend the evening with you. While
it's flattering for him that you went to a certain amount of trouble
to create a memorable meal, the whole effort will go to naught if
you are stressed and fussing.
I can't emphasize enough the importance of visualizing every step
of preparation and delivery. If you think ahead and have mentally
planned every detail, the meal will be like a well choreographed
dance, enjoyable, artistic and memorable. This is what you are
aiming to create.
The recipe is of little or no importance. You can serve wieners and
beans, if you plan the presentation with care and carry it off with
confidence. Confidence and self-esteem are as important as any
elaborate dish you can prepare in producing the ambience that we
call a romantic evening.
In future columns I intend to give you ideas for more meals that
look impressive, but take little effort to prepare other than careful
planning ahead.

Gabrielle Warlick is someone who constantly has to look over her
shoulder and search for safety, someone that didn't ask for what
she has become, but accepted the truth and responsibility of it. She
is a vampire, a member of the children of the darkness. Because of
what happened one-night centuries ago, she has turned her back on
the traditions of a vampire. She has learned to live without human
blood and by doing so has given up most of the preternatural
abilities that vampires have, the ability to fly or mist, the incredible
strength as well as other qualities that separate vampires from
others.
Preston Adams is a hunter in a long line of hunters from the
Adams Clan, who swore a vow centuries ago not rest until they
have erased every vampire from the face of the earth, then and
only then would their conquest be complete. But Preston is
different from the other Adams, he doesn't want to kill regardless if
it is a vampire or not. But his grandfather insisted on Preston being
part of the family business and has given him the assignment of
killing Gabrielle Warlick, but once Preston sees Gabrielle, he
knows he cannot complete the mission and he also knows what the
consequences of that will be.
Preston kidnaps Gabrielle and together they run for their lives.
Accepting the destiny they have chosen, right or wrong. His family
brands Preston as a traitor and the penalty is death. At the same
time, the Council also brands Gabrielle as a traitor of her kind and
to prove her innocence she is told she must kill Preston or be
sentenced to death. This is a task she cannot complete, regardless
of what may happen. But will they survive the destiny they have
accepted? Or will the Adams Clan and the Vampire Council be
victorious in their sentences of the two traitors?
Author Jewel Dartt has created yet another masterpiece. ENEMY
MINE is a book that not only grabs you immediately, but also
keeps you there until the last page is turned. The author has again
created a book that is well written, fast paced and flows smoothly
and quickly without giving you the sense that you are losing
anything. This book actually brings you far enough into the
characters that you share their pain, anger, laughter and anguish.
This is a definite must read for your personal library.

When Jenessa Robertson RN learns the new Director of Nursing is
a man, she is sure this is a ploy on the part of the hospital Board to
divert the nurses in their quest for a new contract. After meeting
Eric Bradshaw RN, she is intrigued and attracted. So is he. Jenessa
has never resolved her grief for her husband's death and she fights
against love. Eric recognizes her. He was the supervisor in charge
of the ICU where her husband dies and when he learns she blames
the death on short staffing, he fears he will lose the chance to earn
her love if she learns of his involvement. The pair must join forces
to prevent a strike by the nurses and the sale of the hospital. As
they work together love grows, but they both wonder how long this
union of opposites will last.

Gemini Books is pleased to announce today's release of Robert
Russell's adventure novel THE MINERS OF BRAVO.
We might admire the courage of our heroes but we rarely explore
its shadow, the darker side that make some courage possible,
perhaps inevitable. When we study that shadow we might wonder
if, indeed, it is truly courage.
THE MINERS OF BRAVO, a novel about several brave men and
a beautiful woman who plies her trade with a remarkable skill,
treats with such courage in the context of a hostile takeover of
Bravo, an old-line mining company that has produced silver ore for
more than a century.
The unlikely protagonist, Matthew Bronson, a balding, middle-age
widower with a slight paunch, searches for lost data that might lead
to the discovery of the Mull ore body, if indeed it exists, and the
salvation of the Bravo mine. He is bewitched by Lili, a siren of
uncertain vintage and questionable loyalty, who, in the end, brings
alive in Bronson a faith he thought long since vanished.
Bronson's search leads from a cave-in in the Bravo mine in Idaho
to a dark alley in New York, to a fire fight in the Sierra Madre of
Mexico, to a seemingly garrulous Oriental Gentleman in the
Philippines, and again to Idaho and New York and the inevitable
unravelling of what was begun by Joe Bravo and Tse Chi Ho,
unlikely partners from opposite ends of the human spectrum, a
century earlier.
In the background stands Sula, a powerful international figure
whose violent quest for what is rightfully his provokes among the
other characters of BRAVO a kind of courage less dramatic than
that of heroes but perhaps more real.
The trail leads Bronson to men whose courage had earlier saved
his life: Jack Mercer, a cold-eyed mercenary, and Willie Mull, a
grim, tight little man who fought his demons with a desperate
bravery, and to Pete Gandy, a giant who did not pretend to be
brave. In the end, Bronson turns to the men and women in whose
hands the salvation of Bravo truly lies: The miners of Bravo.
The book is available from www.ebookshoppe.com as a download
